British history can be lots of things, it can be fun, horrifying, challenging, contentious, sad, inspiring, funny and great, but never dull!
We are amateur history buffs with a passion for British history, warts and all! The history of books, not current opinions, the history of antiquarian sources, not modern narrative. Our focus is Great Britain, domestic events and pre WWI.
Our aim is to provide an overview of a topic, a person, an event, a place etc. with identified sources to allow the reader to evaluate and explore the source material and search for further information. We are not here to judge the people and events of the past, we are here to give life to the words of people that recorded history and the world as they saw it, that contributed to history for good or ill and hopefully some context with time, place and beliefs.
We have a modest but much-loved personal library of works from the 17th century to the present day. Many of the books are long out of copyright and discoverable online via free access projects. Many modern sources are used and website links are provided as references for easy exploration.
We hope, over time, to build a website that people will use to explore and enjoy the wonderful history of our wonderful Island from folklore to ‘facts’ and everything in between.
This is a non-commercial endeavour to provide concise and easy to read articles on all aspects of the domestic history of Great Britain. There are no subscriptions or advertising, the time of those contributing is given freely and in good faith.
